Chemical Peel

A chemical peel is a technique used to improve the appearance of the skin. A solution is applied to the skin in increments of time with the result of the peeling and shedding of the top layers of the skin. The mild inflammation also stimulates deeper layers of skin to regenerate and create new cells leading to smoother skin with improved texture. Chemical peels can target pigment, acne, blackheads and whiteheads, texture, and assist with rejuvenation and anti-aging. It is important to understand that peeling does not indicate response of the chemical peel. Some people may peel a lot and other may not peel at all but the regenerative and fading effects can be the same.

Having oilier skin, current topical regimens, and experience with previous chemical peels in the past can alter the amount of peeling one experiences. Even the same chemical have different effects on the same person depending on it’s strength, time on the skin, and the amount of exfoliation during the session. Additionally, there are peels that are not as safe in certain skin types and having a professional assess your skin is valuable. You want to make sure, like any other procedure, the person will be able to handle any adverse effects that may occur from chemical peels.

There are three basic depths of chemical peels:

1) Superficial Chemical Peel

Alpha-hydroxy acid and similar mild acids is used to penetrate only the outer layer of skin to gently exfoliate it. The treatment is used to improve the appearance of mild skin discoloration and rough skin as well as to refresh the face, neck, chest or hands and to give a glow to the skin.

2) Medium Chemical Peel

Glycolic or trichloroacetic acid is applied to penetrate the outer and effect some of the superficial dermis layers of skin to remove superficial skin cells and mildly stimulate regeneration stem cells.. The treatment is used to improve age spots, fine lines and wrinkles, freckles and moderate skin discoloration. It also can be used to smooth rough skin and treat some precancerous skin growths, i.e. actinic keratosis.

3) Deep Chemical Peel

Tricholoracetic acid or phenol is applied to deeply penetrate the middle layer of skin to remove damaged skin cells. The treatment removes moderate lines, age spots, freckles and shallow scars. Patients will see a dramatic improvement in skin appearance.
